 Government secondary school karongthang was established in the year 1934 as committee school by the local public of karongthang and started as a primary school. late mr Bala das sinha was the first headmaster and the only teacher of the school then. it was only during 1970 the school was adopted  by his majesty chogyal palden thendup namgyal the then monarch of sikkim as government primary school karongthang. in the year 1985 the school was upgraded to junior high school and mr UP Mishra was its first JHS headmaster. and finally in october 2017 the school was upgraded to secondary level. today it as a co-educational school offering five major subjects and  four regional language classes viz lepcha,bhutia, limboo and nepali languages.it has two rcc and two kaccha buildings for ckassrooms , two seperate toilets for girls and boys and also seperate toilets for teachers.the schools has two playground one for football and other is assembly ground where volleyball and badmintion can be played also there is a seperate midday meal shed. the school offers classes from LKG to X and at present we have atotal of 143 students in total.

  during its time from its establishment year till 1980s,it is known that the school  was shifted to many different places in and around  the locality until some 3.5 acres of land was purchased and some donated that the school was able to permanently settle in present location. sitting beautifully on fairly level land which is hard to find in such mountaineous satate like ours, the school today has enough land for further infrastructutal development.
